A tragic hero to me is a person in a tragedy who is the cause of the tragedy. This may be death or injury. In a way Okonkwo is a tragic hero because his gun misfiring starts the tragic events. I think he deserves sympathy because he does try his best to be his best even though it doesn't always turn out right.
He does deserve pity since nothing he ever did was on perpose to harm his city. He thought it was the right thing till after he did it (Beat his wife during the week of peace).
ReplyDeleteThat makes sense. Maybe tragic heroes are formed entirely by accidents. Although, methinks Okwonkwo is an antihero. He thinks he does the right thing, although he beats his wives and children.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Liam. Okonkwo is an anti-hero because he thinks he's doing the right thing, but he fails. According to the events that happen he would definitely be defined as a tragic hero. I think that the feedback about Okonkwo is determined by the what part of the book we are reading. In the beginning we all didn't like him, but in the end we start to feel a little bad for him. He has lost everything and has become as weak as can be which he was afraid of doing.
ReplyDeleteYou're right Dani, Okonkwo deserves to have a little sampathy, but he also derserves what has happened, although no one derserves to be banished for an acciendent or have their whole life taken over by invaders. What I mean is that Okonkwo has mistreated and used his family and others so that he could succeed and have a higher position in life. What comes around, goes around...
